近年來的一系列研究表明，茶葉所含的營養(yǎng)物質(zhì)，對人體有很大的益處，在國外市場，以茶葉提取物為原料的醫(yī)藥保健品和功能食品已經(jīng)成為市場的熱點。茶多酚 (主要指兒茶素類)具有抗氧化、抗衰老、抗病毒、抗腫瘤、防輻射、降脂減肥、抑菌抗炎等多種保健功能，現(xiàn)已發(fā)展成為全球天然健康產(chǎn)品排行前十位，茶多酚系列食品的市場規(guī)模在50億美元以上。

根據(jù)中國醫(yī)保商會植物提取分會和中國食品工業(yè)協(xié)會的數(shù)據(jù)，我國茶葉提取物每年產(chǎn)量大于25000噸，其中速溶茶和濃縮汁占20000噸，茶多酚 (兒茶素 )占2000噸。這些茶葉提取物大多都出口到了歐美國家。雖然我國每年用于深加工的茶葉量并不多，但是產(chǎn)生的效益并不低，“我們今天的深加工產(chǎn)業(yè)用不到占茶產(chǎn)量7-8%的中下檔茶打造了中國茶葉綜合產(chǎn)值的三分之一強”。
